What is Storefront-in-a-Box?
A Minneapolis business in transition decided to rent their storefront by the week this summer (2010). For ten weeks, the store will be occupied by individuals and groups who will use the space a number of ways: entrepreneurial, artistic, cultural, social...
Where is it and what was it?
The storefront is at 2441 Lyndale Ave S, former home of Arise! bookstore.
What's happening in the storefront after August?
The store will be occupied by a new bookstore, Boneshaker Books. Boneshaker Books is the radical & progressive bookstore you always dreamed of: good books, coffee, tea, treats, book events, online ordering and bicycle book delivery!
Questions potential renters might ask:
What amenities does Storefront-in-a-Box offer to renters?
In addition to the storefront, you will have access to:
- a galley kitchen
- a half bath
- a front patio
- a backyard with garden
- a meeting room (shared with another group)
- wireless internet
- phone
- air conditioning
- street-side signage, a customizable sandwich board and help with promotion
Is there anything I can't do?
You can do pretty much anything that's legal. Just tell us what your plan is on the application form and we'll let you know if we see any potential problems.
Can I live there for the week?
No, since there are two other groups who will be lightly using the building and grounds. You can do pretty much anything else, though, as long as it's legal.
Can I play loud music inside and/or outside?
When we've wanted to make noise, we just checked with the neighbors first and generally keep it quiet outside after 10 p.m. If you follow the same guidelines, a bit of noise should be fine.
Can I paint the walls?
Whatever color you like!
Can I charge for events?
Sure. It's possible to recoup the rent by charging or asking for donations for your events.
Can I share the space?
Yes! Team up with a friend or two for the week and split the cost.
How can I promote my week-long sale/opening/film series/etc?
We encourage you to use all of your available social networks — we'll be doing the same. We'll also be using the Storefront-in-a-Box website and the sign in front of the building to promote what's happening. There is also a sandwich board you can put out on the sidewalk when you want to attract attention.
Will I have the place all to myself?
Pretty much, with the exception of Women's Prison Book Project who will use the back conference room several times a week, and Icarus Project who will use the back garden on Wednesday evenings. The actual storefront part of the building is all yours all the time.
2441 Lyndale. Isn't that just down the street from 26th and Lyndale, recently voted Best Intersection by City Pages?
Yes. Yes, it is.
When is Storefront-in-a-Box happening?
Tuesday, June 2 through Monday, August 2: nine weeks total. The rental week is Tuesday through Monday so you have more time around the weekend.
How does it work to sign up for a week?
You'll fill out an online form with you name, contact info, and a description of what you plan to do. We'll give you a call/email and find a week that works for you. You'll pay half ($100) at this point, and the other $100 when you move in.
How can I pay?
Paypal, check and cash are all fine.
$200 seems like a lot. Is there any way to make it cheaper?
If you host an event or open house, you might want to have a donation jar. Or if you're selling things or doing an event with an admission price, you'll make back some of your money there. Or consider making it a group effort: find some friends to collaborate with you and split the cost.
What are times for moving in and out?
The rental periods are Tuesday to Monday. When it's your week, we'll send you a code for the lockbox (with the key) first thing Tuesday morning. You need to have your things out by late afternoon Monday so that everything's ready for the next group.
How big is the space?
The main room is about 750 sq/ft. That does not include the kitchen area and bathrooms. There would also be some room for closet and office storage, but that might be shared.
Does my mother live here?
No, your mother doesn't live here, so we ask that you leave the place as you found it when you move out. Cleaning supplies (broom, etc.) will be available. It doesn't have to be sparkling, just tidy.
Who do I contact if I have other questions that aren't in this list?
Drop us a note with your question and we'll get right back to you: info@storefrontinabox.com.
